It’s getting harder and harder to catch decent size catfish like this one anymore. The past couple of fishing seasons the skipjacks and shad have been hard to get. I have been force to uses items from the grocery store for bait. Raw shrimp just out of the bag is one way. I have soaked them in real vanilla extract as well. Chicken livers get a lot of taps and a small channel cat now and then. I have used seasoned chicken breast seasoned with garlic seasoning, chili powered.
Last year the new thing was adding strawberry syrup to it. My friend got me using Kahn’s “Red Hot Smokies” and they also work well. I have used hot dogs seasoned with cherry Kool Aid or chili powder. I have also tried Spam, but so far I have not had much luck with it. I have caught a couple of channel cats with french fries in the past
I always check the manager special section in the meat department, to see if beef is cheap. If so, I cut it into strips and season it like the chicken. It does stay on the hook real well and the catfish don’t strip it off. I hope this list of my baits helps you out whenever you are out of bait fish for your next catfishing trip. Tight lines to all!
