On Saturday, October 22nd the Lincoln Elementary School Cross Country team wrapped their season in Lexington, KY at the Kentucky Track and Cross Country Coaches Association Meet of Champions. This meet capped a very successful season for the team as well as some individuals. The girls 4th and under team finished 20th out of 42 teams while Tayah Smith, fourth grader, finished 24th out of 348 total runners.
The elementary cross country program returned to Lincoln last year after a long hiatus. With the hire of new coaches, many volunteers, and determination they have accomplished in two years what many thought would take a lot longer. In year one the objective was to recruit numbers and introduce as many students to the sport as possible. Lincoln ended year one with close to 80 runners in grades K-6. The enthusiasm was growing. Individuals found success but the team had yet to earn any recognition. In year two, many of the students that ran year one rejoined the team as well as a number of new runners. The objective was to move beyond just numbers and become more competitive. The intermediate grades increased their practice schedule and the primary grades increased their distance. The strategy paid off.
The elementary girls team entered 7 meets prior to the state meet and returned home with a trophy each time. They walked away with the first place trophy at the Campbell County Championships and third place in the entire region. Their accomplishments also featured two first place finishes and four second place finishes. The team also saw quite a few individuals earning medals as top finishers in each race. These runners include: Tayah Smith, Addison Clifton, Jayda Brehm, and Emily Hall.
The elementary boys program also took steps forward in year two. As a team they finished better in each meet this season than they did last season. Sammy Garcia, a fifth grader, received a medal as a top finisher in every race he ran other than state. He was not the only runner to receive recognition throughout the year. Other individuals receiving medals throughout the year were: Eric Solano Jr. and Matthew Tumler.
Their accomplishments are paying off. The team just received new uniforms that they were able to wear for the first time at state. Through the hard and generous work of some notable administration we were able to not only be a team, but look like a team. Coaches throughout the region are also taking note as many of our runners have been nominated and considered for 1st and 2nd all-region teams. By the time this article is printed selections will have been made. Hopefully there will be a large representation from Lincoln.
As the team moves forward in year three they look to build upon the success of the previous two years. Your support is appreciated and they hope to see you at a future meet! *To view individual and team results, please visit ky.milesplit.com and select the results tab.
