Our Youngest Greendevils are Growing!
It is with great pride and excitement that we announce the results of this year’s kindergarten readiness numbers. As you know, raising kindergarten readiness is a community initiative. Parents are often our children’s first teachers and with the help of preschool, childcare agencies, churches, family/friends, local businesses, and other community programs our littlest devils are GROWING! This year’s group has our highest rate, to date, for readiness with 57% of our students meeting the measure for being “kindergarten ready.” It was just four years ago that only 28% of our kindergarteners hit the benchmark for “ready” and with avid family and community engagement we have doubled that number.
One of the things that make this number so exciting is that we have placed great focus and intention on growing our youngest devils. As part of preschool we are providing rich experiences that result in students having greater capacity to learn, self-regulate, and function in a group setting. All of our staff have worked hard on providing quality preschool experiences for the three and four year olds that are part of our community.
We want to thank our amazing preschool staff, Head Start, and Children, Inc. as they have all worked collaboratively to form one amazing team focused on growing students. We are also grateful for our community childcare agencies; Dayton Youth Center, Care Bears, and Angels in Training for embracing this work and action planning alongside our preschool programs. Together we are better!
We also want to recognize that this year’s kindergarten class is the first class to participate in 2 years of our “Book a Week” initiative. Through this work we have been able to provide over 60 books for these students to build home libraries. This initiative mirrors the work that is being done with other terrific partners. The Lincoln Family Resource Center and United Way provides resources to families and runs our Born Learning Parent Academy and Me and My School summer jumpstart program for incoming kindergarten students.
In closing, we want to thank our amazing parents who have trusted us to grow their children. You have been wonderful to work with. Our work isn’t over…but we are clearly growing and on our way!
