Children Will Be What They See
We are excited to announce that Dayton Independent Schools has been awarded an Innovative Approaches to Literacy Grant that will span three years and bring books, resources, technology, and additional instructional support to our students and staff. This is yet again, another step forward as we look for ways to Inspire, Engage, and Grow each of our Students.
Our district continues to put great effort into improving literacy for all students. We just recently finished one of three Scholastic Book Fairs in which each child at Lincoln Elementary, preschool thru 6th grade, received two free, self-selected books. We anticipate at least two more of these free Book Fairs.
So, you might be asking yourself, “What’s the big deal about reading?” Great question. Like nothing else, reading alters a child’s academic and intellectual trajectory. Research supports that there is a compelling relationship between time spent reading and reading achievement. If a student at the 30th percentile merely read for an additional 10 minutes per day, they would be reading the same amount as those at the 70th percentile.
As famous author Aldous Huxley writes, “Every man who knows how to read has it in his power to magnify himself, to multiply the ways in which he exists, to make his life full, significant, and interesting.
Let’s work together to make sure that every Greendevil is spending time in school and out of school reading. One of the best ways to make this happen is to model this practice in our homes. One of my favorite quotes is “Children will be what they see.” Do they see you reading?
