To Grow..…you need students with a pioneering spirit!
This year we added another exciting piece to our high school learning experience by offering seniors the opportunity to do a co-op job for part of the school day. We currently have four students pioneering this program, and we appreciate their willingness to be lead learners and their risk-taking spirit to try something new.
Currently these students have completed two logistics classes at Gateway College and have earned an industry certification in this field. During these classes, they learned about the hard skills and “ins and outs” of the logistics profession while also practicing and learning about the “soft skills” that are needed to be successful in any field. Our cooperative education students continue to take classes at DHS towards the completion of their high school diploma and then spend the rest of the day at the Greater Cincinnati Airport in their co-op jobs. These students report back to me that their most recent paychecks were approximately $400!!
It is possible that these Seniors will stay in logistics and climb the ladder in this profession. It is also possible that these students learn that this is a career pathway that is not ideal for them. Either way, they are learning and Growing!
We anticipate a greater number of seniors participating in our Gateway Logistics Co-Op program next year. This is yet another option for our students to take a step outside of Dayton and see what opportunities exist. When you combine our Dual College Credit Gateway Program with our Area Technical Center career certifications through this new Gateway Logistics program we are putting together a variety of options for students.
We are excited that next year we are looking to expand even more next year and offer programs for seniors such as computer technicians, construction, and allied health. We greatly appreciate the pioneering spirit of our students to take a risk and do something different. We also appreciate the wonderful partnerships that we are Growing along the river to create real world opportunities for our students.
Our mission is to Grow! So, Grow we do!
