On Friday, March 24th, four Lincoln Elementary Students, Emily Hall, Mason Fromeyer, Braden Fromeyer, and Peyton Young, played in a simul against chess grandmaster Gregory Kaidanov. Then on Saturday, March 25th, the Lincoln Elementary and Dayton Middle/High School traveled to Paul Brown Stadium, home of the Cincinnati Bengals, to participate in the 16th Annual Queen City Classic Chess Tournament.   Thirty “Greendevil Knights” in grade levels 2-8 matched their chess prowess with over 800 other students from states as far away as Michigan to the north and Tennessee to the south.

After 5 rounds of intense playing, the finals results were as follows:
2nd Grade – 3rd Place (just learned how to play beginning this school year)
3rd Grade – 5th Place
4th Grade – 2nd Place (1st Overall School)
5th Grade – 2nd Place (1st Overall School)
6th Grade – 2nd Place (1st Overall School)
7th – 8th Grades – 9th (first time the M/H school played in the tournament)

Individual Awards:
Braden Fromeyer – 8th Place
Tim Haynes – 14th Place
Nikki Lin – 5th Place
Kevin Buemi – 8th Place
Paul Masminster – 10th Place

Head chess coach Tyler Mobarry and assistant chess coach Ed Long were extremely proud of the effort and sportsmanship of all the students.  Special thanks to the Cris Collinsworth ProScan Fund for their support of Dayton’s Chess Program.
